Maths reflective Discussion Nov 2021

PLD Reflective discussion and where to next with Diane Ogle.

22/11/21

Diane, Veronica and Jessie discussion

In autumn next year a lady called Helen Williams (UK based) is bringing out a book called Playful mathematics

Diane - in the first 6 months Diane was with us she says that we have done problems that have covered the whole of the mathematics curriculum

Need to recognise numbers in 3 different ways

  • As a collection / count

  • As a set / recognise the pattern

  • Numbers in words / numeral and word

Strand focus- can mainly occur through opportunities in learning through play

Intentional maths should mainly focus on number

Take the problems up to the level that are where they need to be and support those students who are not yet getting it.  Check in with these ones frequently over the week (little and often) and let the others be a bit more independent.

Picture books for problem solving

  • 10 Spooky bats

  • Ten black dots

  • 12 ways to get to 11

  • 100 bugs- a counting book

Problems

- on NZ maths (problem solving area)

- Nrich- primary teachers- curriculum map (to look at topics and topics that map it)

Maths Eyes website.

Multiplicitylab website for good math eyes.  They send out things twice a week.

Things organised neatly - math eyes website.

2022 - Treen to still take a strand focus but using the same context - can use this with both Pukeko and Nga Ringa

Focus:

  • Choosing appropriate problems for different areas in maths.

  • Stretching problems across a week.

Needs to include counting, subitizing, number recognition

Monday - set the platform - Maths eyes, explore the theme / introduce the theme; eg bug maths eyes, count, sort, pattern, group within the theme.

Tuesday - find the answer to what the problem posed.

Wed - Friday = extend the problem further.

Independent activities link e.g make an insect with the maths equipment.

  • Warm ups to support different learning / big ideas.
