Setting up the expectations well is the key to making this work.

In the maths plenary look at if you upheld the kaupapa of how we work in maths as well as just the maths.

Students are not in groups to ‘teach’ the other students in the group.

Pair buddies up for maths as ‘Learning Partners’ who they will turn and talk to each time during maths.

Press for Reasoning - don’t say yes that right and move in ask them “Why do you think that?” or “How do you know?”.

Be aware of when to STOP ‘adding on’.

When you start out take a notebook to jot down what the kids are doing and what you are noticing about what the kids are doing.

Fold arms if you have something to share instead of hands up or when you notice something.

Refrain from saying when you have the ‘answer’ instead use when you notice something or have something to share.
